Strength Training

At Houghton Physical Therapy, we’re delighted to offer our Strength Training Program — designed to help you develop the strength, confidence, and skills you need to move well and stay active for the long term.

Strength training isn’t just for athletes or experienced gym-goers. It’s an important part of maintaining independence, improving function, supporting bone health, and reducing injury risk — at every age and ability level.

What Can I Expect from the Strength Training Program?

Every program is individualized to meet you where you are and progress at a pace that’s right for you.

We place an emphasis on free-weight training and individualized programming, with exercises selected specifically for your goals, abilities, and current level of experience. Along the way, you’ll learn proper lifting technique, how to select and progress exercises, and how to build a sustainable strength-training routine you can continue confidently and independently.

Whether you’ve never lifted a weight before or you’re ready to make the transition from physical therapy back to the gym, we’ll help you build a strong foundation.

Who Is the Strength Training Program For?

This program is designed for a wide range of people and goals, including:

  • Individuals with osteoporosis or osteopenia who want to safely begin resistance training to improve bone health and reduce injury risk.
  • Patients transitioning out of post-operative physical therapy who are ready to return to the gym, recreational activities, or sport.
  • Adults of any age or ability looking to increase muscle mass, improve strength and functional capacity, support bone health, enhance balance, and reduce injury risk.
  • Beginners who want to learn proper technique, understand free weights, and become confident and independent in the gym.
  • Experienced gym-goers and athletes who want individualized guidance to improve strength, movement, and performance.

❓ Not sure if the program fits your situation? Give us a call! We’re happy to talk through your goals.

Who Will Guide My Training?

Your program will be guided by one of our experienced professionals:

Andrew holds an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. He brings more than 16 years of resistance-training experience, combining his clinical background with extensive personal experience in strength training.
  • Kris Langlais, ACE-CPT
Kris is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and NASM Certified Stretch Coach. A lifelong athlete with more than 15 years of resistance-training experience, Kris brings a practical, movement-focused approach to helping clients become stronger, more capable, and more confident.

Is Strength Training Right For You?

If you’ve been putting off strength training, you know the feeling:

  • Worrying that lifting weights is risky “at your age” or with your diagnosis
  • Feeling lost in the gym, unsure which exercises to do or how to do them safely
  • Finishing physical therapy stronger, but not knowing how to keep the progress going
  • Noticing everyday tasks — stairs, groceries, getting up off the floor — getting harder

The truth? Strength training is one of the most powerful things you can do for your long-term health — and with the right guidance, it’s safe, approachable, and built entirely around you.

Our goal isn’t simply to teach you how to lift weights. It’s to help you develop the strength, knowledge, confidence, and independence to keep doing the things you enjoy.

Your Goals. Your Program. Your Strength.

Whether you’re working to protect your bones, rebuild strength after surgery, return to your sport, or simply become more comfortable in the gym, our Strength Training Program can help you take the next step.
