Get Your Free Back Pain Report!
If you’ve got lower back pain, stiffness or an ache – it’s very tempting to think that it’s nothing, that it will go away on its own. Or, you pass it off as having just “slept awkwardly”, or that it’s just a “spasm” or a bit of stiffness that “everyone” your age suffers from…
There’s no obvious reason why it happened – but it doesn’t seem to be shifting!
If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone – and we hear this type of thing all the time. In fact, Lower Back Pain and Sciatica is a common problem that we see at our physical therapy clinic.

Back pain is one of the most common physical challenges people face, yet it is often misunderstood. Many people are told that their back pain is simply the result of aging, a weak core, poor posture, or years of wear and tear. Others are advised to rest, avoid activity, or accept that discomfort is just something they will have to live with.
At Houghton Physical Therapy, we believe there is usually much more to the story.
Back pain is rarely just about the back itself. The body functions as one connected system, and when one area is not moving or functioning properly, other areas are forced to compensate. Over time, these compensations can create excessive stress on the lower back, eventually leading to discomfort, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
Rather than viewing back pain as an isolated problem, we focus on understanding the underlying factors that may be contributing to it so we can create lasting solutions instead of temporary relief.
Back pain can affect people in many different ways. Some individuals experience a constant ache, while others notice sharp discomfort during certain movements or activities.
Common symptoms may include:
Many people also notice that their symptoms gradually begin limiting the things they enjoy most, whether that’s golfing, exercising, traveling, playing with grandchildren, or simply getting through the day comfortably.

At Houghton Physical Therapy, we take a different approach than simply treating the site of pain.
Todd Houghton often compares back pain to a tripped fuse in a fuse box. The fuse may be where the problem appears, but it is rarely the source of the overload. The real issue is understanding what caused the system to become overloaded in the first place.
That’s why our focus is on identifying the root causes contributing to excessive stress on the back. This may involve evaluating mobility restrictions, strength deficits, movement patterns, lifestyle habits, and how different parts of the body are working together.
Once we identify the contributing factors, we create a personalized plan designed to:
When appropriate, we also integrate advanced technologies such as Shockwave Therapy, regenerative treatments, and other non-invasive solutions designed to support the body’s natural healing process and help patients avoid unnecessary medications or surgery.
Our goal is not simply to help you feel better temporarily. Our goal is to help your body function better so you can move with greater confidence and freedom.
If you’re tired of conflicting advice, temporary fixes, or being told that back pain is just a normal part of getting older, our free educational report is a great place to start. It helps you better understand what may be contributing to the problem. CEO – PT, CSCS
When I was an active 15 year old young man, I broke my leg skiing. This injury was a source of strain physically and mentally for me at this time as I had never had anything limit or stop me from doing anything in my life. I started to do my own physical therapy on myself and I became fascinated with how the human body works. Having a strong love for science and working with people, Physical Therapy was a home run for me when I was thinking about what I was going to do for a career.
As a father of three beautiful girls, a former multi-sport athlete and present triathlete, I truly understand the importance of returning all my clients to their passionate interests whether it is an athletic goal or a return to their activities of daily living.
I really enjoy seeing the smile on my patients’ faces when they have reached their goals through education, support, and the tools that I have learned as a Physical Therapist. This is my ultimate passion.

Clinical Manager – M.S.,PT
I’ve been fascinated by the workings of the human body since childhood. I can still remember spending hours on school projects, building models of bones, muscles, and organs, and studying diagrams of the body’s intricate systems. Growing up active and playing sports only deepened that curiosity and appreciation for movement and performance.
I chose a career in physical therapy because I love connecting with people from all walks of life—getting to know them as individuals, not just their injuries. What makes this profession truly rewarding is witnessing, day after day, the incredible resilience of the human spirit in health, wellness, and recovery. I’ve been privileged to watch people overcome tremendous challenges and achieve healing in ways that inspire me every day.
My own experiences with injuries and life challenges have shaped the empathy and encouragement I bring to my patients. I believe that creating the right environment—one that feels safe, supportive, and motivating—is the first and most essential step in helping people reach their health and wellness goals.

PT
Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to help others, but I wasn’t sure how. It was not until I saw physical therapy’s positive impact on a few family members that I realized it was my vocation. Years of studying the human body and becoming a movement expert has only furthered my interest in the field, and it has inspired me to share my knowledge with all who need it. As a PT, I find it crucial to educate my patients and treat them to optimize their functional mobility and thus maximize their quality of life. I believe it is our duty to treat beyond the physical bodies of our patients and also to heal their minds and spirits.

I was never quite sure what I wanted my future career to be—until, with perfect timing during my junior year of high school, I broke my ankle playing soccer. After attending physical therapy for the first time, I was hooked. That experience opened my eyes to how impactful physical therapy can be, and it inspired me to pursue a career helping others regain their strength and confidence.
I believe in a holistic approach to treatment—focusing not only on the injury, but on the person as a whole. I’m committed to lifelong learning through continuing education courses, books, podcasts, and the shared wisdom of my coworkers, all to provide the best care possible for my patients.
With over four years of experience working with post-operative patients—including joint replacements, rotator cuff repairs, ACL reconstructions, and more—I bring both knowledge and compassion to every session. I have a special interest in working with pediatric patients and strive to make therapy not only effective, but fun.
Outside of the clinic, I enjoy playing soccer, reading, walking my dogs Rooney and Beckham, and spending time with family and friends.

I knew I always wanted to work in the healthcare field due to my mothers background as a nurse but I never knew specifically what I wanted to study until I dived deep into exercise science in high school. After getting immersed in weight training I wanted to apply it into my career and going forward with Physical therapy was a no brainer.
The more I learned about Physical Therapy in school the more it built my anticipation to work with patients as I enjoy building meaningful connections because in rehab you have to consider the whole person not just a body part. One of the main things that really solidified my passion for Physical therapy was my time as a student at Houghton working as an intern to finish my final requirements for school. They welcomed me with open arms encouraging me every step of the way while I learned under them all the way even now as I joined the team.
Education:
Associates of Science Physical Therapist Assistant – Community College of Rhode Island.

Massage Therapist
My path into massage therapy began through my own experience with injury and recovery. After dealing with muscular strain, I discovered how transformative deep tissue work and therapeutic massage could be for both physical relief and overall well-being. That experience led me to pursue a career where I could help others feel supported, understood, and more at ease in their bodies.
My work combines deep tissue massage, myofascial release, stretching, and other therapeutic techniques to help reduce tension, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural healing process. Clients often describe my approach as firm yet mindful, with an emphasis on listening to the body and working within each person’s comfort level. I believe effective treatment should feel purposeful, collaborative, and tailored to the individual.
With nearly three years of professional experience, I continue to expand my knowledge through daily practice and continuing education. Outside of the treatment room, I enjoy spending time outdoors year-round, whether hiking, exploring nature, or enjoying winter activities. That connection to movement and recovery continues to inspire the work I do with every client.
